:: Domain Registration & Hosting ::
Do I need a domain?
Designs with Purrsonality! strongly recommends domain registration for breeders who run larger catteries/kennels and who require graphically intense sites with a large number of photographs. However, as domain registration is now more affordable than ever, domains are a great way of giving your cattery a more professional edge and a more personalized web address.
What is ISP web space?
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is the company that supplies your internet connection account (such as Bigpond, Optus, TPG, AOL etc.). Most ISP's offer web space with your internet account. The amount of space varies amongst providers but usually ranges between 5MB and 20MB.
What is domain forwarding?
Domain Forwarding is a service that forwards a registered domain address (eg. www.yourprefix.com) to a specific location on the internet, such as your ISP web address (eg.www.users.ispcompanyname.com/~username). Domain forwarding is especially useful if you have a site with a long or complicated address. This means someone can type your domain name into their browser (which is usually shorter and easier to remember) and be taken to your site at your ISP web space/address.
With Regular Domain Forwarding, the actual destination URL (eg. ISP address) will be displayed in the location/address bar of the web browser after the visitor has been redirected.
An extension of domain forwarding is domain masking. It works along the same principle as forwarding however, when it redirects visitors, the destination URL (eg. the ISP web address) remains hidden. So if you type in www.yourprefix.com, you will see www.yourprefix.com in the browser address bar, instead of www.users.yourispcompany.com/~username.
Will you host my site using a free provider such as Geocities?
No, we do not use free providers that use pop-up windows or flashing banner advertising on your site. Feedback shows that these sites often deter visitors and can cause some browsers to crash. We also believe that sites bombarded with advertisements that are irrelevant to the nature of the site and which overwhelm the content, make a web site look cheap and un-professional.
Designs with Purrsonality! can provide FREE web space WITHOUT advertisements!
What type of hosting do you recommend for breeders?
It all depends on the size of your cattery/kennels and in turn, the number of pages/images your web site is comprised of.
Small catteries with sites up to three pages, are eligible for free hosting provided by Designs with Purrsonality! Your free web address would be something like http://www.purrsonalityesigns.com/hosting/yourprefix
For mid-sized catteries/kennels who don't have many photographs on their site, we generally find that ISP web space is perfect. Your ISP web address is usually something like, http://www.users.ispcompanyname.com/youraccountusername
For those who have larger catteries/kennels and graphically rich sites with lots of photos, we usually recommend full domain hosting. Your domain will be personalized to reflect your cattery name or breed (subject to availability), http://www.yourprefix.com.

:: Website
Design & Development ::
How long will it take to design/develop my site?
Depending on the size of your site, development usually takes around 4-8 weeks. Development time frame is also dependent on the rate at which clients submit the material that they would like included in their site.
What should I include in my site?
Designs with Purrsonality! is really flexible in terms of content and happy to tailor layout and inclusions to suit your requirements/preferences. Below is a rough, general guide to what breeders may like to include in their site:
- Welcome
Include information such as - what you love about the breed, what inspired you to breed. Your contact information and details of your registering body.
- Studs
Photos of each of your studs, along with their pedigree name (including titles), call name, date of birth and colour. Future studs can be included under a sub-heading on this page.
- Queens/Brood Bitches
Photos of each of your queens/bitches, along with their pedigree name (including titles), call name, date of birth and colour. Future queens can be included under a sub-heading on this page.
- Kittens/Puppies
Details of your kitten/pup policy such as, age your kittens leave home, environment in which they are reared, diet, vaccinations, worming, desexing etc. Costs can also be included too, if you like. I usually divide the page into sub-headings - Litters Expected, Litter News and Kittens/Puppies Available. Under these headings you can include information on matings and expectant queens, new litter info (such as sire and dam details, colours, sexes) and photos, along with colour, sex, date of birth and quality (eg. pet, breeder or show) for each of the kittens you have available for sale. Any ex-breeding cats/dogs you may have available can also be included on this page.
- Breed Profile/Outline
History of your breed, standards, colour information etc.
- Gallery
Photos of kittens/pups and
cats/dogs you have bred.
- Links
Addresses for any of the websites you visit frequently or relevant to your breed (including other breeders' sites).

:: Maintenance
::
Why can't I see my site updates?
There are a couple of reasons why you may not be able to view the latest changes to your site:
- Usually this is because you are viewing a cached* version of your page - in this case, perform a 'control refresh' (see details below).
- There may have been a hiccup when the updates where being uploaded to your site.
Please wait until you receive a confirmation email from Designs with Purrsonality! that your updates have been completed and uploaded, before registering a fault.
* Browser Cache
To speed up web surfing, browsers store recently visited/used pages on a user's disk. If a site is revisited, browsers display pages from the disk instead of requesting them from the server.
It is important that you take measures to ensure you are viewing the latest version of your site before contacting Designs with Purrsonality! to lodge a problem. Holding down the control 'ctrl' key on your keyboard, while clicking the 'refresh' button at the top of your browser, when viewing each page, will force your browser to load the most up to date version of that page. If you are still experiencing problems viewing your updates after two hours from receiving your confirmation email, please feel free to contact Designs with Purrsonality! so we can investigate the matter further.
When the free introductory maintenance period is over, can I maintain my own site?
Designs with Purrsonality! is happy to hand over maintenance to a Client but only if the following conditions are met:
- You must have ISP or full domain hosting (Designs with Purrsonality! free hosting accounts are not eligible).
- You must have FTP software and a web editor installed on your own computer.
- You must have good, working knowledge of these programs.
Designs with Purrsonality! does not provide training of any kind with regard to the use and operation of web editors or FTP software.

:: Search Engines & Site Listings ::
Why isn't my site listed in search engine results?
We ensure that your site details are submitted to the major search engines as soon as your site has been published.
Unfortunately, search engines are notoriously slow at listing sites. From our experience, it can take up to three months before your your site appears in some search engine results. A number of search engines use meta tags and keywords to locate your site and we ensure that keywords which are relevant to your organisation (along with other meta tags such as description), are included in the coding of your site on completion.
When using general terms in your search, such as the name of your breed, it is almost impossible to guarantee that your site will be listed in the first few pages of search engine results (as there are so many sites worldwide containing information on 'Burmese', 'Birmans', 'Bengals', 'Devon Rex' etc.). However, once listed your site should appear on the first page if searching your prefix name.
It does take time and patience but eventually we get there.
I don't get many visitors to my site - how can I increase hits?
In addition to submitting your site details to the major search engines, Designs with Purrsonality! will also list your cattery details with the Cats of Australia and Cat-World online breeder directories.
It appears that the higher the number of visitors/hits a site has, the higher it is ranked/listed in the major search engines. As a result, it is strongly recommended that you list your site with as many online breeder directories and web rings as possible, as this will improve your exposure and consequently increase visitors. Swapping links/banners with other breeders or organisations, is also another great way of increasing traffic.
