The transformation of the kitten from its blind and helpless state to early independence: At two days old - Blind, two day old kittens, respond to the touch, warmth and purring vibrations of the Queen. Five days old - Increasingly noisy when hungry. Eight days old - Even before their eyes are open, they will react to certain stimuli – hissing and spitting if disturbed, for example. Their eyes may open at anytime now. Seeing the world for the first time, as the eyes open after the eighth day. Sixteeen days old - At just over two weeks old, crawling will start within the next four days. Kittens are rather wobbly, little crawlers. Twenty-one days - The litter tray is out and it's toilet training time. Kittens are walking or rather, a kitten 'toddles' towards the tray. Four weeks old - The toys are out. Game playing begins now and at about the same time a kitten washes itself for the first time. Kittens are making great strides - literally. Between four and five weeks old a kitten begins to run. Six weeks old - Young kittens make a first attempt at hunting practice. Toy mice are great fun to play with! From ten weeks onward - Kittens are independent and growth and development continues. Birman litters average between 3-5 kittens and are all born pure white.
